LoBasso's golden goal leads Hatters past Knights in ASUN opener

DeLand, Fla. -- The Stetson University women's soccer team downed Bellarmine University 1-0 Thursday night on a double-overtime golden goal from sophomore Alexa LoBasso on an assist from Lea Alexander
Five minutes into the second overtime, Alexander came down the field into the Bellarmine defensive third and found LoBasso in front of the Knights goal. Off a single touch, the sophomore netted it to seal the Hatters opening ASUN Conference victory.
The Hatters (4-5-1, 1-0-0) and the Knights (2-2-5, 0-1-0) matched each other the entire night as both teams created opportunities but neither defense allowed its opposition to get by. Bellarmine outshot Stetson 4-2 in the first half, but then the Hatters outshot the Knights 7-4 in the second half before the match went scoreless into the first overtime.
After Hatters keeper Sarah Grimmett kept the match scoreless in both the 87' minute of regulation and the 7' minute of the first overtime, the redshirt freshman made a leaping save on a Knights shot destined for the top left of the Hatters net. This kept the match knotted at zero, setting up LoBasso's heroics.
Jackie Fiacco led the Hatters offense with three shots on the night while Telma Sif Buadottir had two shots, both being on frame. Grimmett earned her first career shutout and Stetson's fourth of the season.
"I thought it was a well-executed game plan by the ladies, as they understood what we wanted to accomplish right from the get-go," said head coach Chris Bergmann. "These are conference games and at the end of the day you have to bring the fight and they become dog fights. Sometimes it takes one overtime and sometimes it takes two, but it was great to find some width, get a great cross and a fantastic finish."
Stetson's women's soccer team will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 26 with its second ASUN Conference match as the Hatters take on Eastern Kentucky. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
