Hatters fall to Oakland in home opener

DeLand, Fla. –- The Stetson University women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Oakland University Sunday afternoon in the Hatters 2021 home opener at the ATC.
The Hatters (0-2) and the Golden Grizzlies (1-1) remained scoreless for the first 40 minutes of action, but it was Oakland that found its way onto the board first. In the 41st minute, Oakland's Jackie Reilly found the back of the Stetson net on an assist by Macey Wierenga to put the Grizzlies ahead 1-0 heading into the break.
On the other side of the half in the 59th minute, the Hatters' Maggie Struble found Jackie Fiacco inside the Oakland box who netted her first goal on the year to knot the game at 1-1.
In the 70th minute, after a Stetson foul in the box, Oakland's Macey Wierenga gave the Golden Grizzlies a 2-1 edge. In the 85th minute, Stetson took two shots from the Oakland box but failed to find the back of the Grizzlies net.
"It was a great improvement from our first game," said head coach Chris Bergmann. "We played well enough to win."
The Hatters outshot the Grizzlies 13-11 on the afternoon, but only had one on goal. Graduate student Jackie Fiacco and sophomores Telma Sif Buadottir and Chloe Washington each had three shots for Stetson.
Stetson women's soccer will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 27 as the Hatters play host to the Mercer University Bears. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Admission for fans is $5.00 or free with a Stetson University ID.
