Hatters, Buccaneers play to scoreless draw

Charleston, S.C. -- In a physical double-overtime match, the Stetson University women's soccer team played Charleston Southern University to a scoreless draw Thursday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field.

From the opening kickoff, the Hatters (2-2-1) came out aggressively as Stetson forced a corner kick in the first 30 seconds of the match but could not create an opportunity for a shot. Late in the first half, the Hatters and the Buccaneers (0-1-1) traded blows, but neither team found the back of their respective nets. Stetson outshot CSU 10-7 in the first half, but Jenna Moran made seven saves while the Hatters Ashleigh Wise recorded three saves to keep the match scoreless headed into the break.

Out of the break, the offensive barrage continued for both teams as Stetson and CSU each took five shots but neither keeper let up.  Wise and Moran matched each other with two saves. Late in the half, the Hatters had an opportunity on a free kick, but it was missed high over the CSU net and after 90 minutes, the match remained scoreless, forcing overtime.

In the 20 minutes of overtime, CSU took the only two shots as neither the Hatters nor the Buccaneers could break through the opposition's defense ultimately resulting in a scoreless draw.

Stetson outshot CSU 15-14 on the afternoon as Alexander recorder four shots with three on goal. Graduate student Jackie Fiacco led the offense with five shots and two on goal. Wise played all 110 minutes and finished with six saves on the day.

"Ashleigh Wise played very well today," head coach Chris Bergmann said of his sophomore keeper. "She made a few saves that kept us in the game. We had a great first half that really set the tone," Bergmann continued. "We created some really good attacking opportunities, and they did not give up. It's always good to get a shutout on the road."

The Stetson Univeristy women's soccer team will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 5 as the Hatters remain in Charleston to face The Citadel. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
